Lights left on in a parked car: what should you do?

See a parked car with its lights still on? Most drivers know that feeling. The first thought is usually: “In an hour that car will not start.” Dipped or parking lights left on are a common cause of a flat battery. Here is how to help without invading anyone’s privacy.

Why it is worth acting

Newer cars often switch lights off after the engine stops, but many vehicles still need a manual check. A few dozen minutes or a few hours of parking lights can drain a battery.

A short message from a passer-by can save the owner a jump start, lost time, and a roadside call.

How to pass the message safely

Look nearby: If the car is outside a small shop, gym, or office reception, staff can sometimes page the driver.
